As Leeds Castle embarks on an important journey toward enhanced accessibility, teams across the estate have attended excellent training sessions delivered by AccessibleUK and led by Gillian Scotford, following a comprehensive Access Audit funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This training focused on enhancing accessibility for managers across various departments within the Castle, to become access champions. Here’s a recap of their enriching experience and the tangible steps being taken toward a more inclusive future for all visitors.
Insightful Training Sessions
The training kicked off with informative sessions that offered valuable insights into the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities. It was eye-opening for staff to learn about the barriers many people encounter. And how they can play a role in supporting their experiences. A memorable moment involved learning some Makaton, a form of sign language, in an engaging and fun way. This practical approach not only enhanced communication skills but also deepened their understanding of how to interact inclusively.
An Eye-Opening Exercise
One particularly impactful exercise involved a simulation where participants were asked to imagine the experience of being unceremoniously laid on a toilet floor for a change. This scenario underscored the importance of dignity and accessibility in facilities. Leeds Castle is proud to feature a Changing Places UK toilet, ensuring that visitors can enjoy a safe and dignified experience, avoiding such undignified situations. These discussions served as a vital reminder of why their work as Access Champions is so essential.

Comprehensive Access Audit
The project has been incredibly thorough, involving an extensive access audit of the entire estate. From accommodations and food and drink provisions to retail, visitor reception, and attractions like the ferry and playgrounds, participants meticulously assessed Leeds Castle’s offerings. Meetings with departmental teams helped them gain a clearer understanding of their unique needs. They are now in the process of creating an “Accessible Shopping Wishlist” to prioritise changes.
Thanks and Continuing Support
This project has been a fantastic collaboration, and the support from AccessibleUK will continue, ensuring that the staff feel empowered to provide a warm welcome to everyone, regardless of their abilities.

Leeds Castle extends its heartfelt gratitude to the players of the National Lottery and The National Lottery Heritage Fund for their unwavering support, belief in the Castle’s mission, and their commitment to preserving and enhancing our shared cultural heritage.
Working Towards Inclusivity
This training has reinforced the collective commitment to creating a more accessible and inclusive environment at Leeds Castle. While there is still much work to be done, the knowledge gained and the collaborative spirit of the team inspire optimism about the progress that lies ahead.
Using money raised by National Lottery players, The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports projects that connect people and communities with the UK’s heritage.
