Reuniting History: The Secretaire Joins Its Matching Commodes

Reuniting History: The Secretaire Joins Its Matching Commodes

We have recently added The Secretaire to Lady Baillie’s boudoir, thanks to the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Once owned by Lady Baillie, it joins two matching commodes already in place, reuniting a carefully curated collection. Designed by Stéphane Boudin and painted in Trompe L’Oeil by Roger Natter, it reflects the refined tastes and craftsmanship of its era.

The secretaire, a fine example of historical furniture, showcases intricate detailing, a beautifully preserved finish, and a rich story waiting to be uncovered. This acquisition aligns with our commitment to preserving and celebrating heritage, ensuring that future generations can appreciate the artistry and function of such remarkable pieces.

The Role of the National Lottery Heritage Fund

This acquisition would not have been possible without the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund, whose dedication to cultural preservation continues to make a significant impact. Their funding allows us to protect, display, and share historical treasures like this secretaire, fostering a deeper appreciation for heritage within our community.

The funding will be pivotal in order to showcase Boudin’s early work whilst enhancing the narrative of 20th century interior design. It will also deepen visitors’ understanding of Lady Baillie’s diverse collection and her impact on the interiors of both Leeds Castle and her London estate.

A Closer Look

Examining the secretaire up close reveals its remarkable craftsmanship, hidden compartments, and the fascinating stories behind its previous owner. From a concert ticket tucked behind ‘broken’ glass to playing cards cascading from the centre oval, Lady Baillie’s influence on the design is unmistakable. The secretaire embodies both elegance and functionality, with subtle details that hint at its past use. The top section of the desk features two keyholes—though only one is functional, both were placed to maintain the piece’s perfect symmetry.

Every element of the secretaire tells a story. The delicate Trompe L’Oeil painting by Roger Natter enhances its sense of depth and texture, creating an illusion of three-dimensional detail. The finely crafted drawers and compartments, some cleverly concealed, speak to the artistry of Stéphane Boudin’s design. From its gilded accents to the perfectly aged patina, this piece stands as a testament to the skill and refinement of its era.

We extend our gratitude to everyone who plays the National Lottery, whose contributions help sustain vital heritage projects like this. Keep an eye on our blog for more insights, images, and details about this exciting new addition!
